Edward Mapplethorpe began his solo career in 1990 and quickly gained recognition with his softly drawn, luminous nudes, portraits and still lifes. But it was only his innovative work underwater (Undercurrants, 1992-94) that revealed the artist's unique talent for inseparably fusing the aesthetics of photography and abstract painting.
After a retreat from the events of the art world, a solo exhibition in New York (TimeLines at Foley Gallery) in 2007 presented his most ambitious project to date, in which he combined for the first time the gestural impulses of action painting and the mechanical processes of photography. The works shed light on Mapplethorpe's formal exploration of the line - a theme that has occupied the artist for many years. TimeLines was shown in 2008/2009 together with the follow-up series TimeZones in Berlin and Rome.
In 2011, the new series Variations will be shown in New York, which was created without a camera, using only the darkroom.
Mapplethorpe's current works, with which he continues to explore the limits of the photographic process, radiate a spiritual and organic balance between chaos and order; they are of extraordinary visual range.
Edward Mapplethorpe lives and works in New York.
